Hi Jay, the book is "Lands and Peoples, The World in Colour" Volume 7, published by Grolier. It's a beauty.
There are a few other interesting things it mentions. Like the fact that the US spent 55 MILLION dollars in 1957 (about half a billion in todays money) on it's International Geophysical Year. They used a mixture of aerial photography and 'explosion soundings' to map the area. So basically, they buried explosive charges and saw what happened when they blew shit up.
It says they reached the magnetic pole, but were unable to reach the 'Pole of Inaccessibility'.
And finally, most intriguingly, is this -
"Their main contribution was to the overall picture of the continent. It is now thought that the centre is a dome of solid ice about 7,000 ft thick. The land beneath it has subsided under it's weight to the Earth's soft interior. If the ice melted the land would rise accordingly. The ice itself flows outwards towards the sea, like a very sluggish liquid."
