South Beach, OR
Born in 1975 in the CA Bay Area to a couple hippies who ditched the cesspool in '77 for rural life on the Deschutes River just outside Sunriver. Moved to town (Bend) at 18 where I lived up until 2015, when the influx of trucker hat wearing hipster bro-brah-bro transplants from all over the country had fully invaded the once peaceful little recreational haven. With an escape already on my mind, fate catapulted me into a full-blown nervous breakdown that sent me packing for south Lincoln county, where my mom & brother have lived since '94. It's a lil lonely out here in liberal lalaland, so just giving this forum a shot.

They did start VERY quickly. We actually drove through two of the evacuated areas in Oregon - Lincoln City and a shortcut we take north of Newberg - just on Sunday before everything went to hell. Everything looked normal, though Lincoln City had a major route already closed to traffic for some unknown reason (bridge repair?). It was windy and cold on the coast, but that's fairly common as well. When the evac was started, there was only one route out of town and it was gridlocked for hours - not very smart.

I was out running in the northwest Portland metro area Monday morning, and it was still calm and clear at that time. Then Monday afternoon the winds kicked in and we started hearing about the fires.

The winds came from the east and were just nuts: 30-40 mph gusts that knocked over our fence. They lasted for several hours. People were blaming high winds and downed power lines for starting the fires SE of Portland. PortlandGE was preemptively shutting down power to areas to prevent it from spreading. It looks like most if not all fires started along highways which makes me think power lines may be the culprit in those cases as well.

i'm in south central medford, close to the greenway and downtown, ended up being less than a mile from the northern edge of the level 3 zone of the almeda fire. it was indeed a very tense several days. and without question there are ignition points that are questionable down here. the scanners were rife with 'spot' fires all along the greenway that never made it into 'official' reports etc .
i also find the 'discipline' and following resignation of the state fire marshal, highly suspicious, esp considering his replacement and the 'reason' for the administrative actions in the first place. imho he has plenty to say and was not allowed to share actual facts concerning the fires.

Applegate Valley, OR
As of last year a transplant to SW Oregon in the Applegate Valley. From Idaho but with this great climate I should have moved here long ago. Happy to see there are other THCers in the area! My wife and I are currently living near Ruch and have been gathering the kinds of preparedness skills and assets for homesteading and land based community building. We are very interested in finding a way to be on land with at least 20 or more of like mind within walking distance. We have some community living experience and really like the idea of KIN domains, or a large piece of acquired land that offers opportunities for ownership, which seems to make a community the most sustainable. We are really enjoying the beautiful Applegate Valley and its climate so would love to find a place to permanently land, but also willing to relocate further out for something that is already well underway and in a remote area. We have a small motorhome to start out in if structures are not yet available. We have an interest in developing this project with an emphasis around healing ourselves and others, and have a strong background and desire around natural healing and lifestyle optimization.
